Ultimate Flame Retardancy With Maximum Flexibility

Elektronikkomponenten in Brand- Flammschutz

In the area of housings for electronic components, strict fire protection regulations apply depending on the area of application. Our customer was looking for a halogen-free material solution that would allow maximum flexibility in the production of the manufactured PP plastic enclosures.

As the components also have to withstand impacts and shocks during their use without damage, the notched impact strength had to be compared to the non-flame-retardant standard variant.

  • Fire class UL94 V0 at a wall thickness of 1.6 mm
  • Halogen-free solution
  • Optimised for injection moulding
  • Great flexibility in production
  • Same impact strength as the non-flame-retardant standard version

To enable the desired flexibility in production, we recommended the use of a masterbatch to the customer.

In addition to flexibility, this solution has the additional advantage that the customer can continue to use its proven base material and established production processes.

In order to optimally support our customer in the technical implementation, specific tests were carried out in XINOMER’s in-house technical centre. This enabled us to carry out initial fire tests and notched bar impact tests at an early stage of the project.

Based on the results obtained, a suitable masterbatch solution from the XINOMER MB HFFR range could be proposed to the customer in a timely manner. Furthermore, we were able to determine the required dosage to achieve the UL94 V0 fire class on the basis of the tests. The preliminary tests allowed the customer to greatly reduce the effort for testing and prototyping, which in turn had a positive effect on the development time and the development costs.

With an addition of 36 wt.% HFFR masterbatch, we were able to achieve the UL94 V0 fire class for the injection moulding application at hand. Normally, one would expect a decrease in the impact strength with this dosage.

Our products from the XINOMER MB HFFR line are designed in a way that there is no loss in the impact strength. This means that the flame-retardant components fulfil all requirements for impact strength in field use. Compared to non-flame-retardant components, the customer does not have to accept any compromises.

Thanks to XINOMER’s experience in developing individual material solutions for customers from various industries, we were able to quickly and cost-effectively develop a solution that met all requirements and fully satisfied the customer in terms of results and approach.
