Colourable, Permanent Electro-static Decay (ESD) FEATURES

Common solutions use the incorporation of carbon black based additives for ESD and conductive compounds – resulting in products with ‘any colour the customer wants, as long as it’s black’ – as by Henry Ford’s famous quote.

While cost effective, carbon black containing materials are not always wanted, and cause issues in plastics recycling processes.

A new approach with transparency as a feature was needed.

The issue of static charge

In many fields, the electrostatic properties of packaging and industrial plastics products are of great importance. Elimination of residues, dust and other surface contamination, or the risk of static charge induced sparks: the isolating properties of plastics are often an asset – but sometimes a challenge.

Although cost-effective, carbon black containing materials cause issues in plastics recycling processes, as infrared sensors cannot identify the polymer. For materials with less demanding antistatic properties, often surface active additives are used. These allow other colours, but have a limited functional lifetime, depend on humidity. Also, they contain migrating chemicals by design.

A new approach at stable ESD products

Using state-of-the art newly developed additives, Xinomer was able to provide an innovative, permanent ESD solution. Enabling transparent or neutral colouring, specific grades also fulfill the criteria for packaging food, pharma and medical device products with safe non-migrating additives.

Long-lasting properties and the benefit of recyclability

Xinomer XCN offers carefree permanent performance with stable AS or ESD properties. In most circumstances, these characteristics can be retained after recycling – enabling the re-use of production waste. With their neutral colour, polymers can easily be determined for external recycling.
